4 Tips For Moving In The Winter

The time of year that you need to move out of your old place and into a new one sometimes just can't be controlled. This means you may find yourself having to move in the middle of winter. If this is the case, you will want to prepare for the move with these tips:

  1. Clear the Snow: You want to clear the snow at both your new place and your old place to clear a path for yourself, your family, and the movers. This will allow everyone to get in and out of the old and new space without any issues. This also allows you to use a dolly. Just be sure that you are using salt or sand to sprinkle on the ground after the snow is cleared so that the ground isn't so icy and slippery. Your movers will appreciate it and it can make moving day go so much faster.
  2. Protect Inside the Home: For both the old and new home, you want to be sure that you are protecting the ground. Since multiple people will be in and out of the house, you want to be sure that you are protecting the ground from being exposed to excess moisture and dirt. The best way is to lay down cardboard on the ground or plastic sheeting. The day before your move, be sure to place all packed boxes near the path you have created with the cardboard or plastic sheeting so that no one will have to actually step onto the exposed floor in the house.
  3. Keep Sand, Salt, and Shovels With You: On moving day, you want to be sure that you always have sand or salt with you along with a shovel. You never know if the weather will pick up suddenly and you will have to clear some snow again.
  4. Have Heat and Lights Ready: Before you actually move into your new home, be sure that you have the electricity set up right away. This is going to allow you to use the heater right away, which is important for moving breaks, as well as for when you are ready to call it a night. You also want to be sure that you are able to use the lights because, even during the day, the daylight can easily be subdued by the clouds in the sky during the winter season.

By following these four tips, you can be sure that you are as thoroughly prepared for your winter move as possible. Contact a local mover, like Redondo Van & Storage, for more information.
